Kathy Dunigan

I am a Southern Belle from Louisiana, blooming where I’ve been planted in Destin, Florida! I’ve never strayed far from my roots, and my appliqué work blends the elegance of “all things Baltimore” with the lush and rich fauna of the Deep South. I began quilting in 1987 and quickly discovered my passion for appliqué, inspired by the incredible Elly Sienkiewicz and the historic Baltimore Album quilts. I fell in love with Elly’s methods and, along the way, carved out my own fun path. I never hesitate to “embellish, enliven, and embolden” my appliqué—beads, trims, ribbons, and “findings” all find their way into my work. As I always say, “Anything goes, if it makes your heart beat faster!”

Since 1987, I’ve been deeply involved with fabrics, designing, teaching, and the retail side of quilting – owning and operating The Quilted Peach Quilt Shoppe in Valdosta, Georgia for many years. I was honored to teach for five glorious years at The Elly Sienkiewicz Appliqué Academy and have had the joy of teaching internationally, sharing my appliqué techniques across the USA and Canada. I’ve also hosted my own teaching event, The Kathy Dunigan Academy of Appliqué™, which has given me the chance to meet so many “likeminded” applique enthusiasts. I love sharing my personal appliqué techniques such as my Broderie-Perse-lique’™ method. This “no-fail” technique along with the simplicity of my “success guaranteed” applique, both for hand and machine alike, keeps students engaged and thrilled with their results.

As a true “people person,” I derive immense satisfaction from teaching students of all levels—from beginners to advanced appliqué experts. I consider every student a friend, and my classes are packed with interesting, time-tested methods, grand “shortcuts,” and a festive atmosphere. I love all things appliqué and can’t wait to join you on your journey, whether you’re just starting out or looking for something new to inspire your work.

My husband, Matt, and I—both proud Louisiana Tech Alumni—celebrate 41 years of marriage and are blessed with three beautiful children and four precious grandchildren: three beautiful granddaughters and one chunky grandson.
